PhD Program in Arterial Hypertension and Vascular Biology ARHYVAB

The PhD program in Arterial Hypertension and Vascular Biology is based in the Department of Medicine – DIMED of the University of Padua. This is a referral centre for Arterial Hypertension and cardiovascular diseases in Italy and a Centre of Excellence for Hypertension Research of the European Society of Hypertension (ESH). https://www.unipd.it/dottoratoscheda/arhyvab. https://www.unipd.it/en/phd

This programme is the first in Europe devoted to Hypertension research and was established in conjunction with the University of Rome La Sapienza, Italy. https://phd.uniroma1.it/web/ARTERIAL-HYPERTENSION-AND-VASCULAR-BIOLOGY_nD3561_IT.aspx

To apply for the XLI Cycle to the PhD program in Arterial Hypertension and Vascular Biology, please follow this link: https://www.uniroma1.it/it/pagina/ammissione-ai-corsi-di-dottorato. For English version: https://www.uniroma1.it/en/pagina/admissions-2025-2026-phd-programmes

Course Objective

The PhD Course Arterial Hypertension and Vascular Biology (ARHYVAB) aims to train:
a) researchers with solid expertise in the field of arterial hypertension and its complications, capable of pursuing academic careers in Italy and abroad;
b) clinical researchers who may find employment in academia and in the pharmaceutical industry, with roles in the planning, organization, and conduct of clinical trials on arterial hypertension, as well as in the dissemination of results to the scientific community through dedicated publications.
Specific Objectives of the Course:
1. To provide the skills required to plan, conduct, and analyze clinical and experimental research in both basic and applied science in the fields of arterial hypertension and vascular biology, and more broadly in aging and cardio-cerebrovascular diseases.
2. To train researchers in the areas of genetics, molecular biology, and pharmacogenomics of arterial hypertension, a research field that requires the integration of efforts and resources at the European level.
3. To develop expertise in cardiovascular pharmacology, both in academia and in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, enabling graduates to join research groups focused on the development of innovative drugs.
4. To promote the skills necessary to design and conduct clinical trials in the field of arterial hypertension.

Professional Profile

Graduates of the PhD Course Arterial Hypertension and Vascular Biology (ARHYVAB) develop a highly qualified professional profile applicable to academic, healthcare, and industrial settings. The program prepares researchers for academic careers as faculty members and investigators at Italian and international universities, as well as for postdoctoral positions and research contracts aimed at pursuing long-term academic trajectories.
The training also enables employment within highly specialized hospital institutions, including positions as medical consultants or senior professionals in clinical diagnostic laboratories. Advanced expertise in vascular biology, cardiovascular pharmacology, and translational research further supports career opportunities in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, encompassing roles in research and development, application science, clinical trial monitoring, and participation in biotech start-ups or entrepreneurial initiatives.
Professional placement in both academic and industrial sectors is strengthened not only by disease-specific knowledge in hypertension and cardiovascular disorders, but also by the rigorous research methodology, project planning skills, and analytical competencies acquired during the ARHYVAB PhD program. These skills have proven to be key determinants for successful careers in research across diverse scientific and professional environments.

  AHRYVAB Phd Course and Curriculum

The PhD entails specific commitment and training in the following areas:

1. Experimental research

  • Vascular biology with emphasis on the endothelium and endothelial (dys)function, and its role in the control of vascular tone;
  • Salt and water homeostasis;
  • Pathophysiology of control of blood pressure;
  • Molecular analysis methodologies;
  • Experimental atherosclerosis;
  • Arterial hypertension from animal models;
  • Molecular and experimental pharmacology;
  • Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anti-hypertensive medications.

2. Clinical research

  • Epidemiology and statistics applied to hypertension;
  • Principles of pharmaco-economics applied to hypertension;
  • Methodologies for assessment of target organ damage in hypertension;
  • Pathophysiology of the secondary forms of hypertension;
  • Guidelines for risk stratification and treatment;
  • Design and planning of clinical trials in hypertension.

The First Year of Research

The student will do coursework and labwork.

The curriculum will involve:

  1. General research methods training. An introductory course is held every year at the Venetian Institute of Medicine (VIMM) by the Faculty members of all PhD Courses of the University of Padua and outside experts in scientific fields. The course is focused on ‘How to do research” and covers applications of chemistry and physics to Medicine, genetics, molecular biology, statistics, ethics and social aspects.
  2. Attendance at research workshops and seminars held by the Faculty members and PhD students or outside speakers, mostly focussed on the cardiovascular system.
  3. Advanced coursework in the laboratories. The PhD student has the chance to be educated at a variety of techniques and introduced to a wide array of inter-disciplinary and comprehensive cardiovascular disease programs.

At the end of the 1st year the PhD student is expected to have practised skills of organizing, structuring, and presenting research, hence, he/she will be assigned to a specific research project in the field of Arterial Hypertension and Vascular biology under the strict supervision of an experienced tutor. Whether 1st year PhD student is upgraded to PhD status at the end of the first year of research will depend on his/her performance in the curriculum.

Second and Third Year of Research

Once upgraded to the 2nd year PhD student status, the student will concentrate on his/her PhD labwork to prepare his/her final dissertation. As research progresses, there will be opportunities to present work in progress at research workshops attended by Faculty members and research students. The PhD student will have also the opportunity to attend Journal Club and the Weekly Meetings given by outside speakers and Faculty members.

At the 2nd or the 3rd year the PhD student will spend at least 6 months abroad, at research organisations and universities collaborating with the PhD course.

The normal deadline for submission of the dissertation will be the end of December in the third year of research. Within this time, an original work focussed on the assigned theme should have been completed and discussed in detail with the tutor. The defence will occur about 2 months after, at the presence of the Faculty members.
